Coventry Train Station
I have created this project as a response to a call for emigrant artists to express their view and feelings about Coventry. With my newcomer’s eyes I can see the glory of days gone by and the potential of new growth through the monochromatic routine of everyday journeys and schedules. Coventry, as a new home, can give stabilization and prospects for the future and a place in the community: things that are often taken for granted.
When I moved to Coventry in 2009 I was confronted with the brutalism of the post-war city centre. It is grey and cold in form, so unfortunate in a city with such a long and interesting history. It struck me how many Coventrians felt unhappy with it, feeling that it distances their home from the beauty around them elsewhere and affects both their lives and the paths they chose for their future.
This triptych has been exhibited by Herbert Art Gallery in 2012. It also leaded to creation of a smaller piece for the gallery that has become one year feature in Newcomer to Coventry section.
